Karakuri: Efficient Mechanical Systems for Industry – What's Behind It?

What is Karakuri?

Karakuri, also known as Low-Cost-Automation , is an engineering techniquebased on mechanical principles. Karakuri utilizes gravity, lever mechanisms, and spring force. By strategically harnessing kinetic energy and mechanical advantages, it creates sustainable and robust automation solutions that forgo complexity without sacrificing functionality.

Advantages of Karakuri:

  • Sustainability: By eliminating the need for electricity or other energy sources, energy consumption is reduced to zero.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Low investment costs and minimal operating expenses make Karakuri ideal for companies that prioritize cost-effectiveness.
  • Flexibility: Thanks to its modular and scalable design, adaptations to new production requirements can be implemented easily and cost-effectively.

The term Karakuri originates from Japan's Edo period. As early as the 17th century, mechanical automata were developed that performed complex movements without electronics. These principles were transferred to industrial automation, where they continue to prove their robustness and efficiency to this day.

Karakuri in Practice – A Win for Our Customer

A customer was looking for a cost-effective solution to return the workpiece carrier after assembly with just one movement – entirely without conveyor technology or electronics.

Our Solution:

  • Mechanical Roller Conveyor: Components are safely transported by gravity and spring mechanisms.
  • Cost-saving and sustainable: No external energy sources required.
  • Result: Our solutions increased assembly efficiency by 30%.
